Energy Efficiency of Chillers Improved by 9.7% 

Background

Four fresh water cooled chillers produce 1200TR cooling capacity to a high technology building located in Asia.

Commercial chemicals such as biocide, scale and corrosion inhibitor are used in the condensing water. Ozonation was also used to increase the disinfection power. Mineral scale deposit and biofilm were coated on the tubes which required annual tube cleaning to restore the cooling power. The ozonation system required high maintenance costs and frequently remained idle due to unavailable ozone elements.

In order to improve the energy efficiency of chillers and heat pumps and maintain the disinfection power when ozonator is down, Hydropath technology  was installed. During the test, the ozonation system (the ozonator, air dryer, air compressor, and water pump) were not operated in order to evaluate only the Hydropath performance.

Result

After two months of operation without pre-cleaning of the condenser, the energy efficiency of chiller was improved by 9.7% when coefficient of performance (COP) is compared under similar working conditions such as cooling load, condensing water supply temperature, chilled water supply temperature and the time since tube cleaning.
